Best Time to Sod Your Lawn in Ontario: A Complete Guide

Timing your sod installation right is the difference between a lawn that thrives and one that struggles. Here's the complete Ontario-specific guide.
Sodding Is a Year-Round Question in Ontario
Ontario's climate is unforgiving to poorly timed sod installation. Too early in spring and the ground is waterlogged. Too late in fall and the sod won't root before frost. Too hot in July and new sod dries out faster than you can water it. Understanding the seasonal windows is the first step to a successful install.
Spring Sodding (April – May): Good, With Caveats
Spring is a popular time for sod installation across the GTA because homeowners are eager to get their yards looking good. The soil warms up, there's usually good moisture, and grass establishes quickly. The risk is installing too early when the ground is still soft from snowmelt — heavy sod laid on saturated soil can compact and suffocate root development. Wait until the ground has dried out enough to walk on without leaving deep impressions. In Mississauga and Brampton, this is typically mid-April to early May.
Summer Sodding (June – August): Possible But Demanding
Summer sodding can absolutely succeed, but it requires a serious watering commitment. New sod has no established root system and relies entirely on surface moisture. During a hot Ontario July, you may need to water 2–3 times a day for the first two weeks. Sod farms in Ontario produce excellent quality turf through summer — the challenge is entirely on the installation and aftercare side. If you choose summer, sod early in the morning, water immediately and heavily, and keep foot traffic off for at least three weeks.
Fall Sodding (August – October): The Best Window
Late summer to mid-fall is the optimal window for sodding in Ontario, and it's the period we recommend most often at Lawn By Moe. Soil temperatures are still warm (which drives root growth), air temperatures are cooler (which reduces stress on the grass), and rainfall is generally more reliable than summer. Sod installed in August or September has 6–8 weeks to establish roots before the ground freezes — that's enough time to create a strong foundation that bounces back vigorously in spring.
When NOT to Sod: The Freeze Window
Do not install sod within 4 weeks of the expected first hard freeze. In the Mississauga area, that means avoiding new sod installations after mid-October. Sod that hasn't rooted going into winter can heave, die back, or fail to survive the freeze-thaw cycles. If your window has closed, it's better to wait until spring than to risk a failed install.
Soil Preparation Is More Important Than Timing
Even perfect timing won't save sod installed on poor soil. Before laying sod, the existing soil should be graded, tilled, and amended if necessary. Remove rocks, old roots, and debris. Add 5–10 cm of quality topsoil if the existing base is poor. A pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is ideal for Ontario lawns. Proper soil prep is what separates a lawn that lasts 20 years from one that needs repairs every spring.
How Long Until You Can Use Your New Lawn?
Generally, stay off new sod for 3–4 weeks. In that time you're allowing root knitting to occur — the sod roots growing into the soil below. You can test readiness by gently pulling up a corner of a sod piece; if it resists, the roots are establishing. After 6 weeks in good conditions, your new lawn can handle normal use. Full establishment with a mature root system takes one full growing season.
