Curved interlock walkway leading to the front steps of a brick home, interlock patio cost guide for the GTA

Published 2026 GTA price guides put a new interlock patio at roughly $18 to $45 per square foot installed. Here is what moves that number, what repairs cost, and how to get quotes you can compare.

How much does an interlock patio cost in the GTA in 2026?

Published 2026 GTA contractor guides put a new interlock patio with standard concrete pavers at roughly $18 to $45 per square foot installed, and natural stone at $35 to $65+. At those rates a 300 sq ft patio lands somewhere between about $5,400 and $13,500 before any stone upgrade.

These are market ranges, not Lawn By Moe prices. We quote interlock and hardscaping per project after seeing the site, because the same 300 sq ft can mean a flat, open backyard in Oakville or a sloped yard behind a Milton townhouse that only a wheelbarrow can reach.

Why do the guides disagree? One 2026 GTA guide lists backyard patios at $18 to $30 per sq ft, another Ontario guide says $30 to $45, and a Toronto guide gives $25 to $55. Some fold excavation, haul-away and borders into the headline number; others add them later. Compare what is inside a price, not just the price.

Interlock cost per square foot by project type

Across the 2026 GTA guides we checked, walkways run about $15 to $38 per sq ft installed, patios $18 to $45, driveways $15 to $50+, natural stone $35 to $65+, and lift-and-relay repairs $20 to $35+. Driveways reach the top of the range because they need a much deeper base.

2026 GTA interlock market ranges from published contractor guides (installed; the guides do not say whether HST is included). Not Lawn By Moe prices.

What drives the cost of an interlock patio or walkway?

The pavers are rarely the whole story. Excavation depth, the compacted gravel base that Ontario freeze-thaw cycles demand, site access, borders and curves, steps, drainage work and haul-away decide whether a project sits at the bottom or the top of the range.

  • Excavation and base: about 6 to 8 in for patios and walkways and 12 to 18 in for driveways, per one GTA guide. A thin base is the classic cause of heaving and sinking after a few winters.
  • Soil: the heavy clay found across much of Halton and Peel holds water, so base depth and grading matter more than on sandy ground.
  • Access: a backyard reached through a 1.2 m side gate means wheelbarrows instead of a skid steer, and more labour hours.
  • Paver choice: standard concrete pavers sit at the low end; premium lines, large slabs and natural stone climb fast.
  • Borders, curves and patterns: every curve and contrasting border means more cutting.
  • Steps and landings: each step is built, not just laid, so expect separate line items.
  • Drainage: grading away from the house, and sometimes a drain where water already pools.
  • Demolition and haul-away: removing old concrete or asphalt adds about $3 to $6 per sq ft in one 2026 guide.

Locates and permits: Ontario One Call and Milton curb cuts

Every project that breaks ground in Ontario needs utility locates first. They are free and required by law: request them through Ontario One Call, now operating as Ontario Dig Authority, at least five business days before digging. Changing a driveway entrance usually needs a municipal permit as well.

Ask your contractor who requests the locates, and do not let anyone dig a patio base on a guess about where the gas or cable line runs. Ontario Dig Authority is clear that locates apply to any project that breaks ground, no matter the size or depth.

In Milton, any change to a driveway entrance within the Town's road allowance needs a curb cut and entrance permit. When we checked in October 2026, the Town's roadway permits page listed a $677 residential application fee, allowed entrance work only from April 1 to October 31, and said lots in subdivisions registered from 2000 onward carry a clause on title that widening permits will not be issued. Check that before budgeting for a wider interlock driveway in a newer Milton neighbourhood. Mississauga, Oakville, Brampton and Toronto set their own rules.

Repair or replace? Sunken pavers, weeds and washed-out joints

Repair when the base is sound and the problem is local: one sunken section, a few cracked pavers, weedy joints or lost sand. Replace when the whole surface rolls and heaves, water runs toward the house, or the base was never deep enough for Ontario winters.

A lift-and-relay repair pulls up the pavers, corrects the base and puts the same pavers back, which keeps the colour matched. One Ontario guide lists it at $20 to $35+ per sq ft, so when base failure is widespread, the gap to a full rebuild narrows fast and the rebuild comes with a fresh base.

Winter is hard on interlock: freeze-thaw, plow blades and de-icing salt all take their toll. If your joints and edges took a beating, read our guide to rock salt damage on lawns and interlock before you book a repair, since the cause decides the fix.

Polymeric sand cost and when to re-sand

Polymeric sand is jointing sand mixed with a binder that hardens once wetted, so joints resist washout, weeds and ants. The sand itself is a small part of the bill: one 22.7 kg bag of Techniseal RG+ covers 60 to 120 sq ft of narrow joints. Most of the cost is labour.

Re-sanding makes sense when joints have dropped well below the paver edges, weeds are rooting in them, or a deep power wash has blasted the old sand out. The job: clean the surface and joints, let everything dry completely, sweep the sand in, compact it with a plate compactor, top up, blow the surface clean, then wet it. The manufacturer's data sheet asks for 24 hours without rain and temperatures above 0°C during drying, so plan it for a settled stretch of weather.

If the pavers are sound but grimy, a power washing visit followed by fresh polymeric sand is often all a tired patio needs. Our power washing guide for driveways covers safe pressure on interlock and when to seal after cleaning.

How to get interlock quotes you can actually compare

Give every contractor the same measurements and a simple sketch, then ask each one to put the details in writing: excavation depth, base material and thickness, edge restraint, paver product, joint sand, haul-away, locates, permits, timeline and payment schedule. A one-line quote for "300 sq ft interlock" tells you nothing.

  • Total area, with steps, curves and borders marked on the sketch
  • Excavation depth and base thickness, in inches or millimetres
  • Base material, and compaction in layers with a plate compactor
  • Edge restraint type
  • Exact paver product, colour and pattern
  • Regular or polymeric joint sand
  • Removal and haul-away of old material
  • Who requests locates and any permits
  • Start date, expected duration, payment schedule and written warranty terms

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 12 x 12 interlock patio cost?

A 12 x 12 ft patio is 144 sq ft. At the 2026 GTA market range of roughly $18 to $45 per sq ft installed, that is about $2,600 to $6,500, and the guides do not say whether HST is included. Small patios often land at the higher end per foot, because excavation, base delivery and setup cost much the same at 144 sq ft as at 300.

How deep should the base be for an interlock patio in Ontario?

One 2026 GTA guide calls for about 6 to 8 in of excavation for patios and walkways and 12 to 18 in for driveways, filled with compacted gravel and a thin bedding layer. Heavy clay or poor drainage can call for more. Ask every contractor to write the depth on the quote.

Do I need a permit or locates for an interlock project?

Locates, always: Ontario requires a free locate request through Ontario One Call, now Ontario Dig Authority, at least five business days before any digging. Permits depend on the work and the city. In Milton, changing a driveway entrance needs a curb cut and entrance permit, and lots in subdivisions registered since 2000 cannot get widening permits.

How long does it take to install an interlock patio?

One Ontario price guide puts typical patio installs at 3 to 7 days. Small, simple patios with good access sit at the short end; steps, curves, natural stone, demolition and rain push it longer. Allow time before the start date for locates, which need at least five business days.

Is it cheaper to repair interlock or replace it?

Repair is cheaper when the problem is local and the base is sound, such as one sunken area or washed-out joints. When the whole surface heaves or drains toward the house, the base is the problem, and repeated repairs end up costing more than rebuilding once with the right depth.
